10 to 15 page (minimum 5000 words) research essay, typed with one-inch margins and either 10-point or 12-point font, that uses both primary and secondary source materials (footnotes, endnotes and bibliography pages are not included in the minimum page or word count). The paper must have page numbers on either the top or the bottom of the page, and it must have a title. You may choose one of the essay topics given at the end of this syllabus and in Course Den (Start Here! Course Overview Module) or consult with the instructor on a topic of your choosing.
You are expected to use and cite within the paper at least four scholarly books (NO ENCYCLOPEDIAS OR DICTIONARIES OR WIKIPEDIA ARTICLES) and two articles from a scholarly journal. Examples of scholarly journals useful for studying the Cold War include Journal of Cold War Studies, Cold War History, Diplomatic History, Europe-Asia Studies, Political Science Quarterly, Foreign Affairs, and more.
You are also expected to use at least three primary sources for the paper; there are extensive websites for Cold War documents and you will be reading materials from some of them in the course of the semester.
All papers must cite sources in the form of either footnotes or endnotes that conform to the guidelines found in the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. Do not use in-text citations. Follow the format for the Notes/Bibliography citation system, not Author/Date.
