Unit 4 Discussion
Healthcare organizations and providers like physicians and nurses have an increasing responsibility to embed and improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) so that they can better serve patients and attain set goals and objectives. Nurses and physicians demonstrate DEI when they acknowledge that people come from different cultural backgrounds and should accommodate diverse views (Stanford, 2020). Providers can attain this aspect when they develop cultural competence and focus on delivering patient-centered care through the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions.
One situation that happened in the facility entailed the treatment of a patient who did not have medical insurance but presented in the facility’s emergence room. The patient was from a minority race and with low income making it impossible for her to purchase a health insurance. The triage nurse took her vitals and allowed her to see the physician (Johns Hopkins Medicine Fact Sheet, 2022). However, the hospital policy was that such patients do not access health interventions apart from emergency treatment to stabilize their condition before they can be referred to a public facility. The patient in question had hereditary sickle-cell anemia and heart failure in their family. The patient would come back on three consecutive days with same issue but the hospital declined to run blood tests and even offer medical interventions.
The facility failed to demonstrate cultural competence and DEI as well as the healthcare professionals in this case. They should have offered care based on the provisions of Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) which mandates organizations getting reimbursement from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to offer emergency services irrespective of their ability to pay and without any discrimination.

The facility could have done things differently if they embraced DEI and cultural competence. The nurses and the organizational policy should allow individuals with a history of terminal conditions like sickle-cell to access care by adhering not just on the EMTALA provisions but also aspects of DEI and cultural competent care (Stanford, 2020). The providers should have demonstrated their ability to provide care by considering the patient and her socioeconomic situation.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are important to patients and their providers. Healthcare organizations that focus attention on DEI provide a workplace culture that is supportive and respectful of patients and employees. When healthcare professionals recognize and interact appropriately with patients who are culturally different from them, patient outcomes may be improved. Today, many healthcare organizations have a department and an executive level position, such as chief diversity officer, dedicated to ensuring DEI in the organization.
