Nurse leaders have the responsibility of leading in various aspects of health care, including ensuring that patient care actions or practices are efficient and safe. However, such efforts are usually challenged by various aspects surrounding the care environment. While nurse leaders face great challenges today in health care, one of arguably the greatest challenge facing them is retaining nurses or retaining staff (Lee et al., 2019). The constant demands of patient care pitted against quality initiatives that complicate care delivery, long shifts, and staff limitations are all upsetting nurses who end up rethinking their careers and even decide to shift to other careers. It is the task of nurse leaders to help in retaining such nurses and ensure that they keep motivated (Prezerakos, 2018). Nurse retention is a great challenge since nurses face various issues, such as nurse burnout, having to keep up with the dynamic nature of patient care, and the quest to be on the move to look for greener pastures.

It is important to note that I have also experienced and observed nurse leaders facing various challenges in the patient care environment. The implication is that such challenges need to be overcome so that nurse leaders can be in a position to offer the best leadership. Some of the challenges include nurse burnout. Therefore, they have to always look for ways to motivate the nurses. The other challenge is issues with patient experience. In the face of limited staff, the facilities are not able to adequately meet the patient’s expectations which leads to poor patient experience (McCay et al., 2018). The other challenge I have seen nurse leaders face is inadequate safety in the care environment. They face hazards, aggression from patients and other staff, and exposure to infectious diseases.
