1-Final Writing Assignment – Integration Project Instructions Overview Choose OPTION 1 or OPTION 2. Both options have two parts. (Do NOT complete both projects!) The Final Integration Project is worth 35% of your final grade. Make sure to read all directions and review the rubric before you begin. There are two options for the project. Read both options and follow the requirements below for whichever option you choose. Provide adequate referencing and a separate Works Cited area at the end of the project. The Works Cited area does not count towards the total number of pages in your Word document (Option 1) or slides in your PowerPoint (Option 2). The following statement is required on all written assignments with respect to the Felician University Honor Code. It must be included: “I pledge my honor that I have neither given nor received inappropriate aid on this assignment.” Background The background for both project options is as follows: You are hired at a Catholic healthcare facility which was originally founded by the Felician Sisters. The administration at your workplace is appreciative of your efforts to complete your nursing degree and has received word that you have taken Felician University’s RELS 310. They know that you bring with you a holistic understanding of healthcare which includes integration of moral and spiritual considerations. Tasks Option #1: Patient Handbook for the Facility Scenario You have been appointed the head of a committee that will author a new patient handbook for the facility. Assignment For your Final Integration Project, you will write an Introduction to the handbook, and one article regarding the institution’s stance on a morally challenging medical issue based on the Catholic-Christian understandings discussed in our course. You will submit one Microsoft Word document of about five to six pages. The Works Cited area at the end of the project does not count towards the total number of pages. Part 1) Handbook Introduction: Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and Holistic Care In the introduction, discuss Catholic Social Teaching (CST) with emphasis on its central theme: The Dignity of the Human Person. Explain how your healthcare institution strives to provide holistic care to everyone it serves. Include a discussion of how these concepts have been integrated into healthcare practice from the founding of the institution to the present day. The introduction should be about two pages and include two direct references from course materials. This is not a research assignment, where you need to locate and rely upon material outside of the course. Integrate understandings from our course and refer directly to course materials to explain how and why healthcare at your institution holds CST and holistic care as priorities. Part 2) Article regarding the ethical dimensions of one medical dilemma from the Catholic Christian perspective For your handbook article, choose a morally challenging medical issue discussed in our course which presents a dilemma for those deciding on possible medical treatment options. Define the medical issue and explain the basics of Catholic-Christian teaching regarding the medical treatment options in an article of about three pages. Provide a clear and concise guide to inform patients and/or their families regarding the Catholic-Christian ethical understandings of the dilemma and what types of procedures would or would not be permissible at your institution. Provide two or three references from the coursework including the texts and/or official documents that explain Church teaching. Again, this is not a research paper. Utilize resources from the course. OPTION #2: PowerPoint Presentation Scenario You have been appointed the head of a committee that will make orientation presentations to incoming healthcare staff. Many members of the staff at the facility are not Catholic or Christian and some identify their religion as “none”. Assignment For your Final Integration Project, construct a PowerPoint of 12-14 slides which will be used as part of the orientation presentation to new staff. The PowerPoint will include an introduction and the Catholic-Christian perspective on one medical dilemma faced at the institution. Works Cited slides at the end of the presentation do not count towards the 12-14 slide total. The notes section below each slide provides a narration for the slide and credit for pictures and media used in the slide. The PowerPoint presentation includes two parts: Part 1) Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching (CST) and Holistic Care In the first section of the PowerPoint, introduce the group to Catholic Social Teaching (CST) with emphasis on its central theme: The Dignity of the Human Person. Then, incorporate a justification for the concept of holistic healthcare. The introduction section should include two direct references from course materials. This is not a research assignment, where you need to locate and rely upon material outside of the course. Integrate materials from our course to reference and explain how and why care at your institution is concerned with upholding CST and holistic care. This is not a research assignment, where you need to locate and rely upon material outside of the course. Integrate understandings from our course and refer directly to course materials to explain how and why healthcare at your institution holds CST and holistic care as priorities. Part 2) Explain the ethical dimensions of one medical dilemma from the Catholic Christian perspective Choose a morally challenging medical issue discussed in our course which presents a dilemma for those deciding on possible medical treatment options. Using fewer than eight slides, define the medical issue and explain the basics of Catholic-Christian teaching regarding the medical treatment options. Provide a clear and concise guide to inform new employees about the Catholic-Christian ethical understandings of the dilemma and what types of procedures would or would not be permissible at your institution. Provide two or three references from the coursework including the texts and/or official documents that explain Church teaching. Again, this is not a research paper. Utilize resources from the course.
