SUBJECT:Media and Cosmetic SurgeryRESEARCH QUESTION:Does social media influence people to undergo cosmetic surgery?CLAIM:Social media usage makes people unhappy with their physical appearance and lowers their self-esteem, which influences them to undergo cosmetic surgery as a means to look like famous celebrities. RESEARCH PROPOSAL:I propose to show that social media usage influences people to undergo cosmetic surgery. I will show that continued social media use makes users feel bad about their physical appearance and lowers their self-esteem. I will argue that because of constantly looking at the almost perfect features of celebrities, social media users tend to look at cosmetic surgery as a means to make themselves look more physically attractive and feel better about themselves. In order to accomplish this, I will check academic databases available online so that I can look for peer-reviewed articles that can be used to support my claim. I will also look for interviews with cosmetic surgeons to validate my claim that many people want to undergo cosmetic surgery because they want to look like celebrities that they idolize.       In researching about this topic, there might be some obstacles that I will face. One of these obstacles is the unavailability of journal articles about the topic that I want to research about. To address this, I will broaden my research and look for other materials such as books, online articles, and news reports that show the influence of social media on the rate of cosmetic surgery use. I will also try to get in touch with cosmetic surgery clinics so that I can personally interview cosmetic surgeons regarding the rate of cosmetic surgery incidences caused by too much social media use.     .

Source: Use an APA in-text citation1st Pro-Point: Social media use lowers the self-esteem of users, which influences their decision to undergo cosmetic surgery2nd Pro-Point: The desire to look perfect on selfies that users post on social media influences their decision to undergo cosmetic surgery.3rd Pro-Point: Looking at the social media accounts of celebrities makes users feel unhappy about their physical appearance. Thus, they decide to undergo cosmetic surgery to make themselves look more physically attractive.Chen et al (2019)The research shows that people who regularly use social media have lower self-esteem, which prompts them to use filters before uploading their photos and videos. The research notes that among 252 participants involved in the study, those who mainly used Tinder, Snapchat, and Facebook in uploading photos and videos are more accepting of cosmetic surgery enhancements as a means of improving their physical appearance. The findings imply that young women who have the habit of posting pictures as well as looking at images of other users have a positive perception on cosmetic surgery.Vries et al (2014)The research shows that the use of social media among young girls is positively linked with poor body image and an increased desire to invest on their appearance through cosmetic surgery. The study mentions that consistent exposure to the social media accounts of famous celebrities strengthens the idea of young girls aged 11 to 18 years old that they need to enhance their physical appearance to be accepted on social media.Driscoll & Griswold (2016)The research findings show that people undergo cosmetic surgery because they have low self-esteem. The research also shows that people who generally compare their physical attributes with others, either with their friends or with people on social media, tend to have low self-esteem because of feeling inferior physically.
