Title: HRM-635 Topic 1 DQ 1
I am somewhat familiar with SHRM as I have worked with human resource professionals that are members, and carry certifications with them. After reviewing the website, what I see is that the organization provides a comprehensive overview of the role of a human resource professional in navigating the relationship a company has with its employees. In a sense it almost has what I would describe as outlines on how to conduct “HR business” within legal, ethical, organizational stability, and employee success. According to SHRM (2023), they have aided in policy changes, reframing the relationship companies had with human resources, and highlighting ways in which to maximize an employee’s potential in the work space. The membership offered through SMRH offers folks the support needed to be an effective human resources professional by staying apprised of changes in policy, laws, and approaches to employee relations. Moreover, SMRH (2023) states that it has templates that can be used in drafting human resource activities/programs that would otherwise need to be created from scratch without support from a trusted source. I do not believe they are in and of themselves the solution to all human resources issues or concerns, but they provide the support needed to make informed decisions that benefit the organization as well as its employees. From personal experience, I have seen far too often an HR employee reference SHRM when navigating a situation that is not black and white, and get stuck being indecisive because they are solely relying upon the information contained within SHRM. Employee relations are fluid, and I find SHRM to be a good reference point for HR professionals to work from.

Lawrence,
What role should the internet play in a human resources department?
REPLY
This is a good question. From experience there is substantial misinformation online. Additionally, as it pertains to employment practices there are sites dedicated to attorneys seeking clients to file wage and labor lawsuits. The information is often one sided with the intention of gaining income through finding a client. In one personal experience, I went online trying to find worker’s compensation benefits for a specific situation I was experiencing, and found that the “advise” was to just get an attorney while that is no what I wanted to do. I was merely trying to confirm what my human resources department had communicated to me. On the other side of that, are websites or chat forums that provide incorrect information pertaining to the right entitled to employees. They may not have up to date information, or not be applicable to a certain employee depending upon where they are working. With organizations such as SHRM the tangled mess of online information is somewhat tuned out to allow for accurate dissemination of information that is digestible and easy to understand.
