Career and employee development is essential at any point in an employee’s career no matter what stage. An organization’s leadership team can help support individuals looking to advance their careers and move up the career ladder by providing resources, coordinating mentors, suggesting development courses, helping arrange desk sits in desired departments and providing feedback and guidance to employees on desired career paths. While I personally think lateral moves are not idea it does help gain experience in another role that can be added to your skill set and resume. Along with the employee, the person’s manager and employer have career management responsibilities. (Dessler, 2020) Employees have control over the trajectory of their career and where it may lead them, but their leader should be there to guide them along the way. My organization’s department just started pushing career development by offering LinkedIn courses and other development courses to increase insurance and claims knowledge.

Great post Tiara,
I agree with you that employee development is essential at any point in an employees career. I think have an organization that believes in the internal talent that they have in house and find them valuable that they can take up another position and still be successful is a sign of a good culture and training. While I can agree that lateral movements are not ideal, everyone should be striving to get better and do more, and make more money, but it is important to understand that lateral movements can be extremely beneficial as well. “Lateral moves are a great way to foster continuous learning. When making a lateral move, an employee will need to learn new skills and come across new experiences” (Malec, 2021). As an employee you do not know what will happen next in your career, and if you feel like you are stuck, a lateral movement can be what is beneficial as you learn new skills and are able to build up your resume to be better suited in a higher position.

Organizations playing a role in career management is very important and can lead to employees staying with an organization. There are different ways that organizations can support their employees who seek to advance their knowledge and careers. One of the best ways an organization can help support their employees is by offering career coaches. Career coaches help employees create career plans showing where their careers with the firm may lead. Then the coaches and the organization help individual employees identify their development needs to reach their career goals and then assist in obtaining the training, professional development, and networking opportunities that they require to satisfy those needs (Dessler, 2019). When an organization is able to provide resources for employees to help them learn and gain knew knowledge and skills, they feel supported by their organization and can gain a sense of accomplishment when new skills are learned which can help support employee retention.
