1)One of the most critical concepts covered in this week’s reading are the quirks in intuitive mental processing known as cognitive or decision biases. As the author notes, researchers have discovered more than 40 such systematic errors. My incredibly astute colleague, Robert Prentice at U. of Texas, Austin, has created an excellent website with videos explaining these concepts found here: https://ethicsunwrapped.utexas.edu/series/concepts-unwrapped (which he terms behavioral ethics). After gaining an understanding of one or more of these concepts, find a relevant news article/paper concerning someone who has fallen victim to one of these behavioral ethics/cognitive/decision biases.
2) Post a hyperlink to the news article/paper.
3) Write at approximately 250 words summarizing the article and analyzing the article by explaining which one (or more) of the concepts discussed above impacted the individual and how this individual suffered as a result of failing to recognize one of the aforementioned biases. What could this person have done differently to not have suffered from one of these concepts? How prevalent do you think this type of error is in the general population? As always, consider specific ways that the information you’ve gained from the article can be practically applied to your own life.
