This paper is based on Harriet Jacobs narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Only pages 1- 242 are required reading, though students should feel free to read the entire book.
Question: Harriet Jacobs wrote her narrative to publicly shine a light on the experiences of enslaved women and girls in the Southern United States. She believed enslaved females faced specific issues that society and the abolition movement had overlooked.
Drawing on evidence from the book, create an argument that explains why the lives of enslaved women and girls were so difficult?
To answer the question, students can discuss, or draw evidence, from any individuals in the narrative, black or white. Likewise, all class materials can be used to inform the paper, but Jacobs’ book should be the main evidence.
•The paper should be three to four pages in length.
•All papers have to have a thesis. Students are free to argue whatever they want, but the argument must be supported from evidence drawn from the book in the form of direct quotations.
•All quotations, or ideas taken from the book, need to be cited, preferably using Chicago Style footnotes.
