It is important that you meet your assessment deadline to help manage your workload and ensure your timely progression to your next level of study. However, we understand that in exceptional cases you may be unable to submit your work on time or do well in your exams due to unexpected events which are short-term in nature and beyond your control. Find out more about what to do in situations such as these here.
A coursework extension or a chance to re-take your exam is not an automatic right; to ensure fairness and transparency, exceptional circumstances requests will only be approved if they meet the criteria, are submitted on time and – where relevant – include appropriate professional evidence.

Assignment guidelines and structure
Introduction: approximately 200-300 words
Introduce your topic and the key areas that you will focus on. You may include some brief definitions of key terms for example, professional nursing practice and person centredness along with recognition of the importance/value of excellence in nursing practice in relation to your areas of focus. You will expand on this in your main body however you can start to demonstrate your ability to make relevant links.
You can also briefly consider the context of contemporary health care for example, complex organisational structures, political impact and resource allocation, demographics, multimorbidity and digitalisation, widening health inequalities and unmet health and social needs.
You can also signpost the reader as to how you will approach your essay and what you will include.
Main body: approximately 2000 words
Here you will present a clear well supported argument that considers the importance of and need for excellent nursing practice within contemporary health care.
Remember your focus of person centredness and interprofessional collaboration and integrate these approaches to care delivery with approaches to excellence in professional nursing practice.
Whilst you need to recognise the many current challenges impacting on contemporary health care, due to word count limit, you may wish to focus on 1 or 2 of these challenges. Remember to critically discuss your chosen challenges in the context of professional nursing practice along with person centredness and interprofessional collaboration.
You need to avoid descriptive writing and are expected to demonstrate level 7 mastery of the subject material. You can do this by analysing, synthesizing, and evaluating key approaches, concepts, and ideas. Ensure that you support your key points/arguments with high quality current evidence and include some examination of different perspectives. This approach will help you to present a sustained argument.
Whilst you need to integrate your key ideas/concepts/approaches/arguments, you may find it helpful to structure your main body into logical sections.
For example, you may consider person centred care in the context of excellent professional nursing practice, by examining how a person-centred approach underpins ethical practice, professional values and therapeutic relationships. You may also evaluate how the concept is applied in practice effectively and critically analyse in the context of your chosen challenges, for example, widening health inequalities. This section of your argument may also include a more detailed examination of the concept of person centredness to expand on your brief definition within your introduction.
You could then include a similar section for interprofessional collaboration followed by a further section that integrates the 2 approaches and analyses how the 2 approaches can interrelate and support each other. You could critically consider how the nurse can effectively incorporate both approaches into their professional practice.
A suggested final section is your consideration, of the implications for future excellent professional nursing practice. Your assertions here will be based upon your preceding analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Your argument here may include reference to service users, your own role development and influence, nursing leadership and relevant policy.
Conclusion: approximately 200-300 words
You should draw all your ideas together in a summary statement.
