Assessment for SS 201: Social Institutions [MO9a.-9e.; MO10a.-10i.]

This assessment is required for ALL students enrolled in SS 201- Social Institutions. Social and Racial Problems Presentation (a mid-point program assessment) will be used to measure students’ ability to conduct and present content related to a social or racial problem giving attention to the content knowledge and skills below.

1.     Identify the history of the problem. The candidate provides a detailed description of the social problem. 

2.     Discuss how social and racial stratification exacerbate (worsen) the problem.

3.     Compile secondary research in a review of literature on the problem.

4.     Compose recommendations on how to resolve or respond to the problem.

5.     Draft an APA formatted reference list.

6.     Compile information into a cohesive PowerPoint Presentation.

Part I – Required

Write a five-page paper that is double-spaced (excluding cover and reference pages). You will select a racial or social issue that has affected your community over time (you may select an issue from chapter 12 or 13). In summary, select the problem and discuss its historical background, discuss how racial/social stratification has intensified the problem in your community, and provide recommendation(s) on how to solve the problem.

1.     Use basic, secondary research skills to examine the history of a social and/or racial problem.

2.     Discuss how social and racial stratification intensify the social and/or racial problem.

3.     Synthesize recent and relevant secondary research in a review of literature on the social or racial problem (Must include 8-10 reference sources).

4.     Compose recommendations on how to resolve or respond to the problem.

5.     Compile a properly formatted APA reference list.

 

Part II – Extra Credit (Possible 25 Bonus Points)

Directions:

·        Create a PowerPoint Presentation  

·        Maximum of 10 Slides

·        Slide 1: Title (Name of the Social and/or Racial Problem) by Your Name

·        Slide 2 and 3: History of the Social and/or Racial Problem and the description of the problem (Background)

·        Slide 4 and 5: Identify key examples on how the social and/or racial issue has intensified the problem in your community (Maximum 5 bullet points per slide)

·        Slide 6 and 8: List recommendations on how to resolve or respond to the problem

·        Slide 8 and 9 – Summary/Conclusion (Maximum 5 bullet points per slide)

·        Slide 10: APA References

·        Include images and interactive tools (apply animations, transitions) on each slide.

Each student is required to score a 3 (proficient) or 4 (Target) on each of the scored items in this assessment on a scale of 1 to 4 with 1 as Not acceptable, 2 Competent, 3 as Proficient, and 4 as Target.  

I have attached a sample paper as well as an example student paper. I also attached the Rubric to follow in order to get the most points possible.
