Assignment option 1 – a written assignment

The assignment should be 4,000 words (+/- 10%). See the Student Handbook on the Masters-level Student Information Hub available from your Moodle Dashboard for further guidance about word count and presentation guidelines.

Assignment instruction: Explain the ways in which a particular lesson in your classroom embodies your personal aims and values for schooling. Do not describe the whole lesson but refer to a plan in the appendix.

You are required to write your own title to show your selected focus in the assignment. Here are some possible sample titles in order to help you decide on your own subtitle:

  • A Forest School session: evidence of aims and values.
  • What does a phonics lesson show about my aims and values for education?

How to plan your assignment:

  1. Think about a lesson that you have recently had experience of. This may be a lesson that you taught, that you were a student in, that your children were students in, or a lesson that you read about or viewed in a film or documentary.
  2. Ensure you understand enough about the lesson and how it is situated within its national/international context to be able to critique it in a balanced way from the perspective of educational values.
  3. Select the particular aspect(s) of the module which you find interesting and which you are able to develop further through your assignment topic. Do not try to cover everything in the module. You will need to be selective to attain depth of discussion. Think about the coherence of your argument.
  4. Read extensively around your chosen area. You should draw on this literature throughout the assignment and consider the impact of your reading around educational aims and values; what have been the significant influences in how and why these have been developed or shaped?
  5. Clarify the aim(s) of the assignment.
  6. Decide on a title that represents the particular aspects you will be writing about in the assignment.
  7. Use the Module 1 process work record and assignment proposal form to complete an action plan and submit it via Moodle.
  8. Following feedback from your tutor, proceed to write a draft assignment, which you will again submit via Moodle. This draft will also generate
