This assessment will evaluate your performance against all the course learning objectives:
1. Apply detailed knowledge and critical understanding of relevant literature to the psychology of individual sport.
2. Apply detailed knowledge and critical understanding of relevant theoretical perspectives to the psychology of individual sport.
3. Develop a psychological resource for an individual sport context.
4. Critically review and develop your assignment in response to formative feedback and reflective learning on the programme, detailing how you creatively explored and solved problems to industry-relevant global matters.
5. Apply detailed knowledge and critical understanding of relevant APA publication guidelines and present work in a manner appropriate for the assignment.
You are tasked with developing and providing justification for a psychological resource for an individual sport context.
There are four elements to the assessment:
1. Develop a psychological resource for an individual sport context (30%).
The first element of the assessment will evaluate your performance against the following marking criterion:
*Develop a psychological resource for an individual sport context. (30%)
The purpose of the psychological resource is to support a selected audience in an individual sport (e.g., athletes/coaches/support staff in tennis/running) in developing knowledge and understanding of a psychological topic relevant to their individual sport context. The psychological resource can be a written text, a video, a recorded (PowerPoint) presentation, or a digital infographic/poster. The task for C91TS, Psychology of Team Sport, is similar and we encourage you to diversify your skills, experience, and collective portfolio of work across your MSc programme. In other words, there is an opportunity here for you to expand your portfolio of experience to prospective employers. Across C91TS and C91IS, we suggest (a) using a different medium/tool (e.g., a recorded presentation in C91TS; a digital infographic in C91IS) and (b) selecting a different audience for your resource (e.g., athletes in C91TS; coaches in C91IS).
For this assignment you should draw on one or more principal topics and theoretical bases that we have covered in C91IS. These include: attributions; personality; motivation; stress; efficacy; anxiety; burnout. We advise you to focus in on one topic. You need to demonstrate depth of knowledge in preference to breadth of knowledge. The following submission formats will be accepted:
1. A written text (Word/pdf document) (max 700 words). Please note, this should be a resource that is accessible for your selected audience. You should make it visually appealing (pictures, figures) and it should be able to hold the attention of your selected audience.
2. A video (max 3 minutes)
3. A recorded (PowerPoint) presentation (max 3 minutes)
4. A digital infographic/poster (max a single A4 page).
You are encouraged to be creative in how you present the psychological resource. When developing it, consider how you can engage your selected audience and how your resource will achieve its designed purpose.
The resource needs to be accessible to, and suitable for, the selected audience. In this regard, the resource should be written/presented with the audience in mind with a view to allow for non-experts to understand the content. The purpose of this section is to provide the context for your resource. In this section you need to clearly state:
1. The setting – what individual sport is the psychological resource targeted towards?
2. The audience – who is the intended audience for the psychological resource? This might be, for example, coaches, athletes, or parents. If relevant, what is performance standard and age-ranges of the intended audience (e.g., community/elite sport, youth athletes 11-12 years-of-age)?
3. What is the primary topic that you have selected. This must be one of the following: attributions; personality; motivation; stress; efficacy; competitive anxiety; burnout.
4. The purpose – what is the core purpose of the resource? What are you trying to achieve through the resource? For example, a purpose may be to illustrate how efficacy can be developed and enhanced.ii) The written justification (max 2000 words)
How you structure this section is up to you. However, you must demonstrate evidence of the following two elements in this section. Note also, that these elements are equally weighted, both contributing 25% to your overall grade.
1. Supporting literature
Within this section you are required to demonstrate how you applied detailed knowledge and critical understanding of relevant literature to your chosen topic area. You should draw upon relevant and contemporary empirical evidence to substantiate (justify) the design and information presented in your resource. That is, your resource should be informed by relevant and contemporary empirical evidence (evidence from peer-reviewed scientific journal articles). This evidence can be derived from the sport domain and can also come from wider (psychology) literatures. What underpins your selection of the format for your
resource? What research and interventions have been undertaken in the area that have informed your resource? Throughout you should make specific application of how the literature has informed the development of your resource.
