Introduction to the Technical Project Brief

The technical project brief will be designed allow you to demonstrate that you can use the knowledge, skills and behaviours you have learnt during your apprenticeship.

Your response to the technical project brief will be in the form of a 15–20-minute presentation

When preparing your response and undertaking your research you should think about the following points:

  • Are there any appropriate calculations and drawings
  • Can you make reference to any of the below:
    • relevant scientific and engineering principles
    • relevant legislation and standards
    • health and safety considerations
    • any environmental sustainability concerns
  • How you went about the process of producing the response to the project brief:
    • what worked
    • what didn’t work
    • obstacles that needed to be overcome and how this was achieved
    • what you would do differently next time.

The Technical Project Brief

Scenario

A hotel chain (Client) has procured a plot of docks-side land in an urban development area. The plot has docks to the south, and the north is bordered by a dual carriageway. A bus station is on the other side of the dual carriageway. The client has engaged an Architect to sketch out a potential site plan and the Architect has engaged your organisation to advise on all matters of building services, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

At a concept meeting the Client is pleased with the Architect’s initial proposal for a long, narrow building plan running North to South and the Architect’s explanation of how the building will integrate with its surroundings. However, the Client suggestion is that the building should be rotated through 90 Degrees so that half of the rooms have a clear view of the docks and will therefore attract a premium rate.

Order Non Plagiarized Assignment

You are required to identify an improvement or innovation that can be incorporated into the design as a consequence of this rotation that will impact on the design and/or delivery of a building services system or component(s) within this building and carry out research to assess its feasibility.

For the purposes of this assignment ‘an improvement or innovation’ is not limited to the traditional interpretation of building services system or components. It could include renewable and LZCT technologies as well as other green solutions associated with sustainable design of buildings.

Technical Information

Drawings have been included in DWG and PDF

These preliminary drawings provide enough detail to enable you to visualise the form of the building and its generic fabric.

The Task

Prepare a 15-20 minute slide presentation

For this hotel you are required to identify an improvement or innovation that can be incorporated into the design as a consequence of rotating the building that will impact on the design and/or delivery of one of the building services systems or components. You are required to carry out research to assess the impact of this improvement or innovation and your reporting of this research must:

  • discuss the advantages and disadvantages of your proposed improvement or innovation paying particular attention to its impact on sustainability (you are likely to need to consider the impact of this rotation on other systems);
  • consider what changes need to occur to make the chosen improvement or innovation a reality including a critical examination of the role of / impact on stakeholders;
  • make an informed, evidence based prediction as to what will happen as a result of your improvement or innovation. Your prediction may relate to any aspect, or number of aspects, relevant to building services such as: occupant wellbeing, occupant comfort, energy efficiency, sustainability, environmental impact, safety, project planning, life cycle costs, maintenance.

Task

Power point Slide based on (Hotel Rotation Project brief)

  • Produce a 15 – 20 minute presentation (12 – 14 slides)
  • For this hotel you are required to identify an improvement or innovation that can be incorporated into the design as a consequence of rotating the building that will impact on the design and/or delivery of one of the building services systems or components. (Mechanical Innovation Only) (Maybe Hybrid system or Air source heat pump etc)
