Students are required to read a case study and provide a DSM-5 diagnosis, along with a rationale for the labels considered, rejected and applied. The case will be provided on vUWS under the relevant Assessment Tab. Detailed instructions on the application of assessment measures designed to assist in this process will be provided in the lectures and tutorial activities.
Assessment measures that should be utilised in the assessment include: The DSM-5 Cross-Cutting Level 1 Symptoms Measure, The World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule, AND any DSM-5 Cross-Cutting Level 2 or Symptom Severity Measures that may be required. It is important to to note that students may be exposed to a variety of measures during the exercises, and that it is not necessary to apply all of them. E orts should be taken to administer and interpret only those items relevant to the case. Indeed, marks will be deducted form any submission that does not provide an account of the processes employed to arrive at the nal diagnostic outcome, regardless of the accuracy of that outcome.
Speci cally, your report MUST include:
1. Account of which DSM-5 diagnoses were considered, and some explanation as to how you arrived at these diagnoses.
2. An explanation as to why considered disorders were retained or rejected.
3. An account of where the case ful ls the criteria for the diagnoses you gave, as well as where the case does not. 4. An account of how the symptoms cause functional di culties, and some evaluation of whether diagnosis is justi ed
Your answers are to be submitted as an individual exercise. Marks will be awarded on the strength of your argument and ability to explain your reasoning, rather than describe the case. Purely descriptive accounts will not receive higher than a passing grade. A short-list of commonly asked questions will also be made available on VUWS. Students are encouraged to review this before attempting this assessment. A speci c format/layout will be required for the
diagnostic report, which will be outlined to students.
