After reading the two attached brochures about Wikipedia and two different example Wikipedia entries, write a 500-word Rhetorical Analysis Paper on the following prompt:
What are the genre conventions or expectations of an encyclopedia entry? How do the specific articles you read adhere to the conventions or expectations? Point to specific examples from both articles, and be sure to think about visual and electronic communication in addition to written communication. Why do you think Wikipedia articles follow the genre conventions that they do? What is Wikipedia hoping to accomplish?
Rhetoric is the study of how writers or speakers
use communication (written, oral, visual, etc.) to persuade or influence an
audience. A rhetorical analysis, then,
explores the connections between the author, text, and audience, paying special
attention to how the author gets
her/his message across. Rhetorical analysis goes beyond summarizing what a text says and focuses on how writers may achieve their intended
effect on their audience. Rhetorical analysis also offers insight into why a writer may have chosen to use
specific strategies
RAPs can be conversational in tone, but they
should still be complete, proofread, and done thoughtfully. Above all: fully answer the prompt, be specific, and
support your ideas with quotes, examples, etc. from the text. You do NOT need
to turn in a Works Cited page with your RAP, but you should include in-text
citations for quotes, paraphrasing, and summary in MLA format.
