Art & Activism Review/Blog Entry
PLEASE USE PICTURES OF THE ARTIST’S ART (Lusophone (Angolan/Brazilian/Portuguese…): Paula Rego, Adriana Varejão, Mónica de Miranda
Francophone (French/Algerian): Kader Attia, Zineb Sedira) YOU’RE EXPLAINING WITH CITATION (IN PDF), thank you :)!
For this exercise in art analysis, take some time to look into the life and work of one of the following artists introduced:
Lusophone (Angolan/Brazilian/Portuguese…): Paula Rego, Adriana Varejão, Mónica de Miranda
Francophone (French/Algerian): Kader Attia, Zineb Sedira
Read at least one essay or introduction to the artist’s life and work. Look through a selection of their works to find ones that are most compelling to you. Pick a couple specific works of art or a series of works to focus on in your blog/review.
Look at the works closely, in terms of what they represent, how they represent, where and for whom and why? Consider how the works may correlate to some of the post-colonial and feminist perspectives and critical concepts discussed in class. How do they work aesthetically? How is the works’ aesthetics linked to ethics? In what ways are these activist works of art? How do they engage with abstract form, material reality, story and history, art history?
As a sort of blog entry or brief review essay, write a personal 1-2 page introduction to the artist (250+ words) focused on close reading of one or two works. Imagine you are writing for an audience beyond the class, contextualizing and commenting on the relevance of this artist. If relevant, you might connect the artist’s work to that of writers (Cardoso or Sebbar). (Cite your sources for info on the artist and include images/links if possible). Draw your reader into your encounter with the artist and your thinking about these critical aspects of the artist’s work.
