ASSIGNMENT 1
Computer Exercise: ANCOVA
Question:
After controlling for years of education, does one’s choice about how to spend a $500,000 gift relate to positive attitudes (total IPA score)?
1. Identify a covariate, dependent, and independent variable from the question statement.
2. Open your dataset.
3. The “gift’ variable has 4 groups—1) invest it with brokerage firm; 2) buy vacation home at place of my choice; 3) pay off existing mortgage; and 4) donate whole amount to charity of my choice. Exclude the group # 4 (donate whole amount to charity of my choice), as it has only 33 subjects (4.7% of total subjects) and may lead to non-equal variances when it is included in the analysis. Read the document, How to Exclude Specific Values from Analysis.
4. Check the assumptions of ANCOVA.
Mutually exclusive groups
Homogeneity of variance of groups
Normality of dependent variable
The covariate should be a continuous variable
Linearity assumption: the covariate and the dependent variable must show a linear relationship
Homogeneity of regression across groups: the direction and strength of the relationship between the covariate and the dependent variable must be similar in each group. Read the document, How to Run Regression for Homogeneity of Regression Assumption.
5. Run ANCOVA. Read the document, How to Run ANCOVA.
6. Interpret SPSS output and write up your findings. Your report includes:
Results of assumption check
Your answer to the question
ANCOVA summary table. The table template is attached on this assignment.
6. Submit the followings:
A text file
A SPSS output file (.spv)

ASSIGNMENT 2
Computer Exercise: Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance
Questions:
Do never smoked people rate their quality of life differently than still smoking people?
Do people rate their quality of life differently over time, now (qolcur), past month (qolpastmonth), and at age 18 (qol18)?
Is there an interaction between smoking status and time in relation to quality of life rating?
1. “Smoke” variable has 3 groups—Never Smoked, Quit Smoking, and Still Smoking. For this assignment, we will use only two groups for the analysis—Never smoked and still smoking. Exclude the “Quit smoking” group. Refer to the document, How to Exclude Specific Values from Analysis.
2. Check the assumptions of RM-ANOVA
Independence
Normality
Homogeneity of variance
Sphericity
3. Run RM-ANOVA. Read the document, How to Run RM ANOVA.
4. Interpret SPSS outputs and write up your findings. Your report includes:
Results of assumption check
Your answer to the question.
RM-ANOVA summary table—refer to the table template.
