Task
Drawing on the readings from this unit, you will critically reflect on the lesson plan you created in Assignment 1: GenAI lesson plan prompt (Formative). Your analysis will focus on three main areas:
1. Relevance to SEL
How well does your lesson support the development of children’s social and emotional skills, based on key wellbeing theories?
(Approximately 600 words)
2. Limitations and Improvements
What are the weaknesses of your lesson, and how could it be improved? Focus on ways to involve families, support educators’ own SEL, and include more opportunities for children to practise new SEL skills.
(Approximately 600 words)
3. Cognitive Load
Are there parts of the lesson that may overwhelm children or place too much demand on their thinking? Suggest ways to reduce this and make the activity more manageable in terms of memory and focus.
(Approximately 600 words)
Steps
Step 1: Consult the essential and additional readings
Begin by reviewing the required and recommended readings from Modules 1 to 4, focusing on content related to social and emotional learning (SEL), theories of children’s wellbeing, and cognitive load.
Step 2: Analyse the relevance of your lesson to SEL
Write approximately 600 words critically evaluating how your AI-generated lesson supports the development of children’s social and emotional skills. Use theories of wellbeing discussed in the Unit to guide your analysis and support your arguments with readings from the modules.
Step 3: Identify limitations and suggest improvements
Write approximately 600 words, reflecting on the weaknesses of your lesson and suggesting ways to strengthen its impact. Consider how the lesson could better involve families, support the educator’s own SEL, and create more opportunities for children to practise SEL skills and knowledge.
Step 4: Evaluate cognitive load implications
Within approximately 600 words, assess your lesson in terms of cognitive load. Identify any aspects that may be overwhelming for children and suggest strategies for making the activity more manageable in terms of attention, memory, and overall mental effort.
Step 5: Support your analysis with readings
As you write each section, make sure to clearly reference the essential and additional readings from the Unit. Avoid using general internet searches or personal opinions; your analysis should be grounded in academic sources provided in the Unit.
Step 6: Referencing
At the end of your assignment, include a full reference list in APA 7th edition format. Ensure all sources cited in your analysis appear in the list, and check for correct formatting of in-text citations and references.
Summary of Assessment Requirements
This assessment requires students to critically evaluate the AI-generated lesson plan they created in Assignment 1. The purpose is to deepen understanding of how early learning experiences can support children’s social and emotional development (SEL).
Students must draw on the unit readings and complete a written critical analysis across three key areas, each approximately 600 words:
