SUBJECT: CONSUMER PRODUCT REPORT
Topic. Choose a consumer product to investigate,
such as a camera, television, economy car, or microwave oven. Try to choose a
product that you or your family might consider purchasing. You will research three
models or brands (at least $500 or more) of the product and present your findings
in the form of a comparison/recommendation report using the memorandum format. You must
recommend the purchase of only one
model or brand. For example, you can compare three brands of digital cameras
like Kodak, Sony, and Hewlett Packard. You CAN NOT compare three models of the
same brand like three different Dell computers or the Cadillac Escalade to the
Pontiac Montana.
Sources. In order to determine the
three models or brands of the consumer product you will be comparing, you will
need to consult the Consumer Reports Magazine (at the library) to gather data about
the three most popular brands or models. Also, you must use the Consumer
Reports Magazine to justify the features used in the
evaluation/comparison (criteria) of
the models or brands. You must use at
least five sources in researching your topic. You may have primary research
in the form of interviews with individuals (salespeople and technicians) in a
position to comment on the attributes of your product.
Secondary
research will be in the form of print or electronic sources, such as magazine
articles, newspaper articles, Consumer Reports Magazine or
Internet (product websites).
Content. Your report should present
a background/introduction, findings/discussion/analysis, and a recommendation
section based on the established criteria used to compare the three
brands/models of the targeted product. The body of the report should be 2 to 3 pages
in length. Your reference page will be
one a separate page. (Refer to Example
Comparison Report on the supplemental CD/Flash Drive and Reference page sample).
Appearance.
All reports
must be neatly typed on good quality paper. You must be sure that the print
quality is sufficiently dark to be read easily.
You
will be using APA style format for your parenthetical and reference
citations.
Grading. Your report will be graded
for completeness, content, and technicalities (English use, grammar, spelling,
punctuation, formatting, margins, and so forth). How you express yourself is as
important—if not more important—than the depth of your analytical abilities at
this point in the development of your skills. Learning how to present your
findings will transfer to other reports you write in your career. It is
extremely important that your report be proofread carefully. Reports that have
numerous careless errors will not receive a satisfactory grade no matter how
thorough the research or analysis.
