Choose ONE of the following prompts on which to write a 5-page essay. Papers are due on Bruinlearn on Friday, May 10 by midnight. Please use Standard English, black ink, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, double spacing, and 1” margins. Please also be sure to include your name and a title for your paper. You should reach out to your TA if you have questions about how they would like you to approach these prompts. (See the syllabus for our late paper policy.) If you are drawing on course materials only, you do not need a bibliography.
1. Our Sister Killjoy’s first section ends with three words, each on their own page: “Where, When, How.” What is the significance of these three words to the text? Draw on specific examples from the excerpt of Our Sister Killjoy that we read for class to support your argument.
2. In his introduction to Death and the King’s Horseman, Soyinka insists that the “Colonial Factor” is “a catalytic incident merely.” How are colonialism and colonial operators like Pilkings depicted in the text, and what role do they ultimately play?
3. Choose two of the South African short stories from week 5 to compare and contrast in terms of their depictions of race and/or gender.
Do prompt number 2. Use as many citations as necessary. Include quotes and examples from Death and the King’s Horseman by Wole Soyinka
