Unit 3- Discussion Board
Nonverbal communication is a vital way of communicating with studies showing that close to 80% of communication occurs through facial expressions, tone and pitch of one’s voice, gestures through body language and physical distance between or among those communicating (Wanko et al., 2020). A recent conversation that I had shown that nonverbal communication can have significant effects on one’s appreciation and understanding of information. This entailed a discussion about forming a team to spearhead new changes in the nursing unit. The nurse manager nodded with approval about the need to have new communication protocols during handover that I presented to my colleagues. However, a majority of them thought that she disapproved these recommendations and failed to enact them. They argued that her body language and facial expressions signaled otherwise. Consequently, she had to clarify that she agreed to the changes and wanted the staff to implement the recommendations.
Nonverbal communication affected the conversation as it spoke more than the message I delivered. The posture and body language as well as the nodding of the head by the nurse manager were interpreted differently by nurses leading to non-adherence to the recommendations based on research evidence (Ali, 2018). The effect of non-verbal communication was evident as the manager had to clarify what the gestures and body language meant to nurses.
Understanding nonverbal communication will make me a more effective communicator in all situations because of the benefits that it offers (James et al., 2020). It will reinforce and help me modify my words when speaking to people. Nonverbal communication will help me to convey information about my emotional state and offer feedback to other persons who I will be communicating with in my workplace (Skills You Need, n.d). More fundamentally, it will assist to regulate the flow of communication during such conversations.
