Final Examination
Directions:

1. Describe the history of the establishment of Deaf Education in the United States from 1816 to the present.
2. Describe the ways in which Deaf culture is different from American culture in terms of communication and sharing of information.
3. Compare the definitions of “hearing” “hard of hearing” and “deaf” from a Deaf cultural perspective and medical/auditory perspective.
4. Describe the events that lead up to, during, and the aftermath of the “Deaf President Now” protest.
5. Describe the history and evolution of American Sign Language from its beginnings to its validation as a true language and what is happening with it today.
6. Describe the myths and misconceptions about American Sign Language and what research shows are the actual facts about it.
7. Explain why many Deaf people are opposed to the use of Cochlear Implants.
8. Give details on what kind of information professionals working with Deaf people should know about Deafness and Deaf culture.
9. Explain about the diversity within the Deaf Community and some of the controversial issues that have been raised such as racism (and other “isms”) and/or cultural conflicts.
10. What are some of the issues that are raised regarding the use of SSI (Supplementary Security Income) by Deaf people?
11. Discuss the topic of employment and/or the lack of it among deaf people.
12. Compare and contrast the following two organizations: AG Bell and NAD.
13. In what ways has technology been a benefit and detriment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people?
14. What is Deaf Literature and the types of genres that define it?
15. Give a brief biography of an American Deaf artist who is/was well-known among the general arts-loving public.
16. Describe some of the issues faced by Deaf people who pursue higher education.
17. What is the “Little Paper Family” and why is it a significant part of Deaf history?
