CSYM017 Databases Individual Assessment AS1 Brief | UON

CSYM017 Assessment Task:

Title (Question): Individual assignment work

Setting the scene:

The assignment is designed to prepare students for designing relational and graph models based on a given dataset, implementing them into working databases, performing transactional queries for decision-making, etc. The students are also required to compare and reflect on the data models for the choice of future application scenarios.

This assignment requires students to complete all assignment tasks to achieve the learning outcomes.

The assignment includes two key parts:

  1. Portfolio (40%);
  2. Assignment Task (60%)

Learning Outcomes aligned to this Assessment:

On successful completion of this assessment, you will be able to:

  1. Explain in depth how relational metadata and SQL’s data definition/manipulation language are conceptually underpinned by the relational model.
  2. Interpret and discuss in depth the semantics of database modelling techniques.
  3. Appraise the functional capabilities of SQL’s definition/manipulation language.
  4. Obtain good understanding of the NoSQL concepts and various database systems in this category.
  5. Recognise how common requirements of database applications are related to database functionality.
  6. Design, validate and refine an appropriate model which correspond to a given description of a data related problem.
  7. Implement a functional database system based on a given model.
  8. Perform database queries using appropriate languages/standards, e.g., SQL, Cypher, etc.
  9. Design, build and thoroughly test a series of client-based programs which communicate with the backend database. All software developed must adhere to appropriate Human Computer Interaction (HCI) principles.
  10. Critical Thinking: evaluate ideas and concepts.
  11. Professional communication: communicate effectively in a variety of situations with different audiences including via electronic media, including face to face group discussions, software demonstrations requiring technical knowledge and language, walkthrough sessions.

Part 1) Portfolio

Students are expected to log their learning activities (e.g., lab exercises and extra work) in the portfolio. There is no standard format, however, the portfolio should be structured well for easy reading (e.g., including a Table of Contents with week numbers). The work each week in the portfolio should include two sections: 1) the learning activities (i.e.,

Assessment Criteria & Weight Learning Outcomes addressed through this Assessment No submission / no evidence Fail 1–49% Pass 50–59% Merit 60–69% Distinction 70–100%
Portfolio – learning activities (20%) a, b, c, d, e No submission The effort is lacking – there is only limited amount of work in the portfolio. There is evidence of some effort; most of the activities have been attempted. Very good effort has been made to attempt all the exercises; there is evidence of extra work. Tremendous effort has been made in doing the assigned tasks, there is evidence of attempting extra challenging activities.
Portfolio – Reflection (20%) j, k No submission There are not enough reflective comments. The reflective comments are broadly satisfactory. Good reflective comments, which show in-depth understanding of topics. The reflective submission is of high standard in terms of both quantity and quality.
Quality of Assignment Work (30%) f, g, h, i No submission There is insufficient work – from model design, implementation, database queries. Overall, it is lacking. The work is broadly satisfactory in terms of model design, database implementation and queries. The work is good, the models are carefully designed, the databases are implemented properly; the queries are carefully designed and most of them return correct results. The quality of the work is exceptional – the models are carefully designed. There is a clear evidence of proper database implementation; the quality of the queries is excellent in terms of correctness and novelty.
Explanation of the Assignment Work (30%) j, k No submission Little or poor explanation of the assignment work. The justification/explanation of the assignment work are broad
