Describe the advantages of the DfMA technique in terms of:
Time – compare the conventional vs proposed methodology
Quality – how quality is improved
Environmental Impact and control measures taken
Cost comparison between conventional construction and DfMA technique;
Constraints & challenges that were encountered or anticipated. Do your research and describe the PPVC/MET process from the Architectural design (incorporating what you have learn from the ICPH Site Visit*), specialist PPVC/MET design, manufacturing, delivery to site and installation.

Part A: Project Information & Task

Background:

1 Over the last 5 years, in response to BCA’s roadmap for construction productivity improvement, the industry has seen an upsurge of game-changing technologies and the adoption of innovative building methods. The shift towards the adoption of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) principles in projects are transforming the sector. DfMA focuses on off-site manufacturing and on-site assembly, which reduces construction time, improves quality, and decreases manpower requirements on-site. Two primary DfMA technologies being pushed in Singapore are Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) and Mass Engineered Timber (MET).

2 Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC)

PPVC modules are manufactured off-site and come complete with internal wall/floor/ceiling finishes, fixtures and fittings, and transported to site for installation. PPVC has been mandated in selected Government Land Sales (GLS) sites since 1 November 2014, as part of the government’s initiative to push the use of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) in the private & public sector.

Adoption of PPVC has gone through several public and private projects with various successes.

3 Mass Engineered Timber (MET)

Mass Engineered Timber (MET) projects in Singapore represent a progressive shift in the construction industry towards sustainable and efficient building practices. Leveraging advanced timber products such as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam), these projects offer significant benefits in terms of environmental impact, construction speed, and structural performance.
