Objectives:
Upon completion of this assignment, the student will:
· Describe the underlying genetics and/ or epigenetic components as they impact cellular functions in various diseases/ conditions.
· Explore the pathophysiology of disease processes/concepts related to nursing process within the spheres of care.
· Describe the body’s defense mechanisms against injury and illness at the cellular level.
· Utilize evidenced based practice when considering pathophysiological processes and conditions
Assignment:

For your initial post:
· Create a fictitious patient who is presenting with one of these eight conditions:
o Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM)
o Myocardial Infarction (MI)
o Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
o Bacterial Pneumonia (Adult)
o Kidney Stones
o Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
o Cirrhosis
o Rheumatoid Arthritis
· Give history of present illness, including subjective (what the patient tells the nurse) and objective (what the nurse finds on assessment) information. Include a minimum of 5 (total) subjective and objective information (include additional subjective and object information as appropriate, but must include at least five).
· Include medical history (previous diagnoses over the lifespan), surgical history (previous surgeries), and social history (smoking, alcohol use, recreational drug use, gender identity, etc.).
· Include all Vital Signs: BP, HR, RR, T, O2 Sat, & Pain
· Include necessary diagnostic studies (e.g., X-rays, CT scans, MRI, echo, EKG, etc.) and/ or necessary lab findings (e.g., HgbA1c, troponin, sputum cultures, bilirubin, etc.). Include a minimum of five (total) diagnostics or lab findings. MUST include SPECIFIC findings (i.e. give numbers to the labs, “impression” from radiologic studies, and so on).
· State disorder/medical diagnosis.
· Discuss in 2 or more paragraphs the pathophysiology of the disorder.
· Discuss a minimum of five treatment options. Include additional treatment options as appropriate, but must include at least five.
· Describe the factors that improve patient safety/ reduce the risk of harm and improve patient outcomes for patients with this diagnosis.
· Discuss what the nurse needs to educate the patient about (include any cultural, psychosocial, legal or ethical implications also). Be sure to take into consideration the histories of this patient and how this diagnosis will affect this patient.
· Give citations (in text) AND references (list at end) in APA format (a few minor errors are acceptable).
