**Scenario:**

 

As an ICU nurse, I regularly utilize data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in my practice to provide high-quality patient care. For example, during a typical shift, I may encounter a patient with multiple comorbidities who presents with unstable vital signs. Initially, I collect data by assessing the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation levels. This raw data provides valuable information about the patient’s current physiological status. Next, I interpret this information in the context of my clinical knowledge and experience, recognizing patterns and trends that may indicate a deterioration in the patient’s condition. Drawing upon evidence-based guidelines and best practices, I apply my knowledge to develop a comprehensive care plan tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Finally, I exercise wisdom by making informed decisions about interventions, prioritizing actions based on the patient’s acuity and likelihood of benefit. By integrating data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, I strive to deliver optimal care and promote positive patient outcomes.

**Description of Information Systems Interaction in ICU Setting:**

 

In the ICU setting, I interact with information systems (ISs) multiple times throughout the day to access patient data, input clinical documentation, and communicate with the healthcare team. The ISs commonly used include the electronic health record (EHR) system, medication administration system, and bedside monitoring systems. These ISs are primarily station-based, with computer workstations located at the nursing station and in patient rooms. Additionally, handheld devices such as tablets or smartphones may be available for on-the-go documentation or communication. The ease of access to these ISs significantly impacts patient care by facilitating timely access to critical information, enabling real-time monitoring of patient status, and supporting efficient communication and collaboration among multidisciplinary team members.

 

**Meeting Two Rights:**

 

If I could only meet two of the rights discussed in Chapter 2, I would prioritize meeting the right to privacy and the right to safety. The right to privacy is essential for maintaining patient confidentiality and protecting sensitive health information from unauthorized access or disclosure. Respecting patient privacy fosters trust and confidence in the healthcare provider-patient relationship, which is integral to delivering patient-centered care (Finkelman, 2016). Similarly, the right to safety encompasses the provision of a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, encompassing measures to prevent harm, minimize risks, and ensure the physical and psychological well-being of all stakeholders (Finkelman, 2016). By prioritizing these rights, I can uphold ethical principles, promote patient autonomy, and contribute to a culture of safety and respect within the healthcare setting.
