“But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want Poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin.” Why does the Savage choose this even though he witnessed all this his first 25 years of life and thought he wanted to be done with it?
The Cyprus experiment failed and ended in civil war. Early experiments in social communism failed because the groups were all intellectuals and no one wanted to work. Use the problems Mond described in the Cyprus experiment and show how these are typical problems in an intellectual, and therefore unstable, society.
In Chapter 10, the Director had called the Hatchery a “hive of industry.” In the next chapter, the Savage calls the Deltas a group of maggots climbing over Linda’s body. Compare and contrast the two statements.
The title of the novel, Brave New World, is an allusion to Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. Read a summary of the play. Then read the context of the quote itself which Miranda speaks in The Tempest, Act 5, Scene 1. Write one paragraph including the information from each of the following questions:
a. Why do you think Huxley chose this quote as the title for his novel?
b. Do you like the title? Why or why not?
c. If you were given the opportunity to propose a new title for the novel, what would you suggest? Explain why you think your title would be more suitable.
