Sohu island was once a fairly remote island where tourism was practically almost unheard of. The island has a tiny population of only 3, 000, who are largely indigenous, and sits alongside a chain of larger islands that make up an archipelago, and the area has a fairly cool weather.

The island has in recent years, witnessed increasing numbers of tourists visiting and the authority overseeing the island and the entire area has been planning for tourism the last few years. In 2018, according to statistics, about 10, 000 tourists were found to have visited Sohu island, and the number is expected to increase.

This comes at a time when accessibility to the area has also improved, with more modes of transportation now possible for tourists from all over the world, who are attracted to the endemic species of flora and fauna Sohu island and also the unique islanders’ culture.

The area was designated as a UNESCO World heritage site in 1992 and the authorities clearly knows that there must be protection of the island and its precious resources, which includes the flora and fauna, as tourism grows. Tourist facilities on Sohu island are not very well developed and appear lacking.

The island does not wish to receive too many tourists as they are concerned about tourism harming the natural environment and damaging the local cultures. Types of natural habitats found on the island include limestone karsts, tropical limestone forests, and sea grass beds, lagoons, beaches, caves and willow swamp forests.
