DQ: What is the main issue for your organization in addressing a solution to evidence-based nursing practice?

Evidence based practice in nursing involves the application of knowledge obtained from  various credible sources after critically evaluating the information and then using it to make informed decision  on the most effective intervention to use to enhance  patients outcomes (Goodman, 2013). For this reason, evidence based care is regarded as the golden standard for delivering competent and patient centered care to clients.  In spite of its benefits adoption of evidence based practice in healthcare system remains low. This attributed to various factors, which include cost implications, ethical issues, shortage of relevant professionals and lack of a harmonized curriculum in nurse education to promote adoption of evidence based practice in the workplace.

In my organization, the main issue in addressing a solution to evidence based nursing practice is about organization policy.  Every healthcare institution has its own policies in regard to provision of care to patients.  In my organization, healthcare professionals are required to follow the already established procedures and interventions. This usually places nurses at an ethical and professional dilemma especially when it comes to application of evidence based practice in healthcare. The overall impact of the organizational policy is that it discourages nurses from applying evidence based practice approaches.

To address the issue, it is important for the organization to modify its policy to ensure that nurses feel empowered to apply evidence based practice in their clinical duties. However, it is important to ensure that the patient safety is not compromised in the process. Patient safety in this regard can be enhanced by ensuring that nurses are adequately trained and skilled in evidence based practice. This can be done by encouraging nurses to participate in lifelong learning and enrolment in higher education programs, including BSN and doctoral studies. This will improve their ability to apply research in nursing practice, as required of evidence based practice.

During your practicum, determine what clinical problem or issue the organization is

facing. Discuss two implications for nursing.

One important that the institution is facing is poor staffing ratios. Staffing ratios

involve the ratio of nurses to patients. There must be enough nurses to serve the patients that

visit an institution. Most of the US states do not have regulations that determine the exact

staffing ratios for nurses. Therefore, institutions have to determine the ratios that are optimum

for them. The present pandemic has increased the number of patients who need services.

Therefore, even in institutions where the staffing ratios were not very poor, the pandemic has

led to the need for more nurses in places where it is very hard to get candidates to fill the

gaps. The institution I work for has staffing. The low number of nurses, as compared to the

patients who seek services, leads to poor outcomes. Also, the changes in the demand for care

during the pandemic has led to the institution needing more nurses.
