For this assignment students will research an artist assigned by the instructor and present their research in a 8-10 minute presentation to the class. The oral and visual presentation will allow for the evaluation of communication skills and student’s ability to apply discipline-based knowledge to the real world.
Engaging with the content of an artwork means deciphering a lot more information than may be included in the work itself. Because artworks communicate visual ideas, just as speaking and writing communicate verbal idea, engaging more deeply by using a combination of describing the elements and principles, analyzing symbols, carefully looking at the context (place and time, for example) of the piece and researching the artist and how history has informed the making of the piece, will all help us to more fully understand the meaning – or content – of a work.
This is not a “book report” where you simply regurgitate someone else’s information. You are required to critically think about the importance of the artist and their work in a broader context.
Begin by giving a biography about the artist and the significance of the artist’s work in art history. Make sure to consider what major ideas are circulating in the time and place the work was made. Look at other artists working at the same time, in the same region, and look at how their works are similar or dis-similar.
You must research and present on a minimum 3 different artworks by your specific artist. For each work, tell us the medium, year(s) it was created, the artist’s intended meaning, the significance of the context (time, place, societal make up, major movements/unrest/inventions/etc) in which it was created, what’s significant about the style of the artist, and how the work has made an impact in the art world, or world, in general.
You must include a source page/slide that uses a minimum of three outside sources. Please note that Wikipedia does not count and should not be used. You may choose the format in which to cite your sources and if you need help there are resources like OwlPurdue.com or the writing center, on campus.
Due dates will vary, depending on when you present. See below for details on that.
Questions to ask and seek answers for:
1.What is the significance of the artist’s artworks in art history?
2.Why was the movement (such as Impressionism, Surrealism, neo-expressionism etc.) of the artist
important in history and in art?
3.What was the conceptual and aesthetic principles of the artist’s work?
4.What other significant artists or artworks seek to address the same concept as the works you are highlighting?
Please add a works cited page!!!
