GOVT 201 Unit 3 – Discussion Board

The passage of major laws or legislations across the country has always resulted into significant changes and positive outcomes for citizens. The United States’ Congress has passed many major legislations that have been enacted by different presidents to give directions on issues impacting the country at any moment of its history. The passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010 remains one of the most significant moments for the American citizens and its history (Leboff, 2020). The ACA or Obamacare made sweeping health care reforms in the country with some of its most critical provisions including the extension of coverage to uninsured Americans, reducing the cost of healthcare and improving quality through the creation of an efficient system. The law also eliminates industrial practices like rescission and denial of coverage for those with preexisting conditions.

The Affordable Care Act had significant impact on individual’s life and their communities in different ways. Firstly, it led to expanded access to healthcare as over 20 million Americans enrolled to access health care insurance (Rapfogel et al., 2020). Secondly, the law impacted individuals and communities by lowering the cost of care and improving the quality of services attained from healthcare organizations and providers (CBPP, 2020). The passage of ACA shows that millions of Americans could not access quality care or had to make out-of-pocket payments to get these services. As such, it is a critical policy that heralded the transformation of the U.S. healthcare system (Xu et al., 2020). The implication is that if the president had vetoed the law, it would not have been implemented or may have had to be reintroduced in Congress and be voted for and if it gets majority be enacted.
