After completing the module, you should be able to:
1) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of environmental and geographical
approaches towards crime and offending behavior.
2) Develop the capacity to evaluate situational crime prevention and its
relationship to the ‘what works’ movement.
3) Apply a range of theoretical perspectives and develop basic skills and abilities
to critically analyze the social construction of crime.
4) Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of global, political and
economic structures within which definitions of crime and harm are situated.
5) Demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which problems may have
different characteristics in local and global perspectives, and present different
ethical challenges at each level.

that tutors will use the assessment criteria set out below in assessing your work.
This assessment comprises 100% of your overall mark for this module. Answer
BOTH questions.
1. ‘Green’ criminology is generally noted as having ‘anti-capitalist’ influences
and yet socialist countries, too, have done huge damage to the environment. To
what extent should we see the core concerns of green criminology as ‘apolitical’
and primarily concerned with industrial production itself? (2,000 words)
2. Crime mapping has become an important technique in dealing with crime
‘hotspots’. But what, if anything, can it tell us about the underlying causes of
crime including social environments? (2,000 words)
