HCM 307 Unit 5 – Discussion Board
The need to improve understanding of the healthcare industry implores one to seek advanced nursing education through courses like Health Care Management at the Colorado Technical University. The course covers different topics that are not only compelling but also provide in-depth information and knowledge of the healthcare industry and care provision for nursing professionals. As such, throughout the course, a number of topics stood out and can be considered as the most compelling (Borkowski et al., 2020). However, I believe that all topics in the course were compelling as they offered new knowledge on different aspects of the U.S. healthcare industry. As a student transitioning to join this healthcare sector, I would assert that having sufficient knowledge of all areas of the U.S. healthcare industry is intriguing and interesting because it offers a platform to be better care providers.
These topics include the role of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the impact of healthcare transformation through innovative care delivery models like Accountable Care Organization, and the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA 2010) in improving access to healthcare in the United States. It is evident that different federal agencies play a critical role in enhancing access to healthcare and ensuring that there is health equity despite the evident disparities that hinder millions of Americans from accessing quality care (Wager et al., 2021). The CMS oversees many federal healthcare programs with the aim of improving quality care provision. For instance, through its value-based purchase, the CMS ensures that providers offer quality services to patients and health population.
The course also shed light on the role of different legislations in improving access to health care services. These legislations like ACA and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), 21st Century Cures Act and others mitigations during national health emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic all demonstrate that provision of healthcare services should be guided by laws and protocols that respect different aspects of human dignity. The course also offered information on the cadre and types of organizations that deliver care in the industry, particularly non-profit and for-profit healthcare providers (Buchbinder et al., 2019). While these organizations have different aims and management structures, their core goals are similar in that they all focus on contributing to community and society by promoting health and wellness among different health populations and individuals that they serve.
The topics in unit 3 focus on different barriers that limit access to healthcare services like communication and cultural as well as racial and language differences. The increasing diversity in the country means that nurses and other healthcare providers should attain skills in cultural competent care to deliver quality care to patients from different socioeconomic settings. In unit four, the course offered different aspects expected of providers in healthcare settings, especially quality care through reduction of adverse events and patient safety risks (Dash et al., 2019). The unit emphasized the importance of inter-professional collaboration among different healthcare providers. As such, the course was interesting and exciting, especially through learning of new aspects of care provision.
I would have liked to learn more about the foundation of different components of care or aspects that shaped the different approaches to health care delivery in the country. I would have liked getting discussions on these topics and the current perspectives that nurses and other providers have in relation to several topics that the course covered. Effective communication and collaboration are critical components of care delivery and should have been discussed more and their influence on nursing perception on care delivery.
