Original question was: How is a literature review different from an academic research paper?
1. A literacy review is a summary of research literature that is relevant to the topic being discussed. In a literature review, articles and books are organized into groups to help readers focus on the aspects of a research topic. It summarizes relevant and important information related to the topic and synthesizes information. A literacy review can focus on previous research of the topic and identify potential gaps and errors in information. By providing background information, a reader can know more about the research topic. Contents of a literature review vary based on many factors that include: the purpose of the article, tension between other research theories, the length of the article, and the number of previous studies on the research topic. Literature reviews typically consist of an overview, a summary, and an evaluation. Evaluations are also called critiques. They can also include a discussion of methodological issues and make suggestions for future research. Literature reviews are often included in introductions of essays, research reports, or thesis but they can be used as separate assignments. Literature reviews focus on two topics. These topics are information seeking and critical appraisal. Information seeking is “the ability to scan the literature efficiently, using manual and computerized methods, to identify a set of useful articles, books and documents” (Taylor, 2007). Critical appraisal is “the ability to apply principles of analysis to identify unbiased and valid studies” (Taylor, 2007). Literature reviews must related directly to the research questions or thesis, synthesize results into summaries, identify areas of controversy, and create questions that require further research.
“A research paper is a piece of academic writing that provides analysis, interpretation, and argument based on in-depth independent research” (Scribbr). Often, an outline is used for an academic research paper to make the writing process more efficient. This outline is a list of key topics, evidence, and arguments that are included in the academic research paper. These sections are divided with headers. Academic research papers are typically longer and more detailed. A thesis statement is an important part of an academic research paper. A thesis statement is a statement of the central argument. It is a concise summary of the topic which was researched. Academic research papers then go to rough drafts after the outline to ensure that all topics are discussed and organized appropriately. There should be clear organization of paragraphs. First, there is an introduction which usually answers what? why? and how? Next is the body then the conclusion. A second draft is usually considered for new ideas, ensuring that the reader can remain focused, and to ensure that the paper answers the main question of research. Revision and proofreading are necessary to ensure that the paper is well articulated.
A literature review can summarize sources or combine summary and synthesis. A research paper uses literature as support for a topic. The difference between a literature review and an academic research paper is that a literature review’s main focus is summarizing and synthesizing arguments without adding new contributions. An academic research paper focuses on developing a new argument. One must support their own argument in an academic research paper.
