Instructions: For this part of the exam, please prepare a three (3) page (minimum) essay plus a cover and works cited page giving you a total of five (5) pages based on ONE of the following questions noted below. Your essay (to be uploaded in Canvas) needs to be argumentative and persuasive in nature, providing facts (not opinions) in answering the topic selected. Follow the standard MLA format (as you did for your individual essays) for this exam. Please note, your essays are not to exceed four (4) pages in length (plus a cover and works cited page) for a total of six (6) pages.
What purpose did the Second Continental Congress serve in 1775?
If you haven’t already, please review the “Sample Essay Outline and Guidelines,” for more details. The samples here, for the most part, are in reference to our exam’s guidelines.
Ignore the points on: “Total of 5 (five) typed pages”, since your essay (not including cover and works cited page) will be a bit shorter. In addition, ignore the “Presentations,” section since you won’t be presenting your essays.
An important note on the exam:
Please make note that the exam will be open/available for you to upload on Canvas starting Thursday May 2 at 10:00 a.m.
Please make sure your exam is in word (doc, docx) format. The exam needs to be uploaded no later than Sunday May 5 (11:59 p.m.) so, please begin working on it as soon as possible.
On late or missed exams/assignments:
No emailed exams will be accepted, unless instructed to do so. No extensions, or makeups, will be given without a valid motive for missing the exam’s due date. As noted in our syllabus, you need to contact me within 24 hours of a missed assignment (with a valid motive) for makeup consideration. Valid motives include being out sick, with a doctor’s note as proof of your illness. Forgetting to upload the assignment, not able to upload the assignment or internet issues are not valid motives. So, please make the needed arrangements to meet our deadlines.
One more note on the exam. Please include a cover page and works cited page (minimum 4 sources, our textbook included). Cite your sources in the following manner: Author’s last name and page number encompassed in parenthesis. For example: (Roark, 121). For additional support on your essay, cover and works cited page, please lookup the “Sample Essay Handout,” currently available in our Sample and Sources section.

At the bottom, pages 1-7 are provided from the textbook that I’m using. You can use this for at least one of the sources in the essay. The textbook is, THE AMERICAN PROMISE, VALUE EDITION, COMBINED VOLUME: A HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES BY James L. Roark.  I hope that will help.
