Written Assignment (50 points):
There is only one written
assignment due at the end of the course. The objectives are to explain
macroeconomic concepts in your own words with real world examples, to improve
writing and research skills.
For this assignment you
are to summarize a topic covered in one of the chapters, as it
relates to macroeconomics (not microeconomics), that has interested you the
most and apply it to a real event.
Below is a hypothetical example
of steps a student might take in completing the course paper:
You became interested in chapter X, “Taxes”.
You define and explain a concept such as “incidence of tax”,
“excise tax”, along with “burden of taxation”. You organized your notes
on relevant points sequentially.
You find current, recent, or past articles relevant to your
chosen concept. (For example: How a 5% hotel room occupancy tax imposed
on tourists may affect room prices, its quantity demanded and supplied,
and who, the gust or the hotel management really bears the burden of the
tax.
You offer concluding remarks, that may be subjective, but
supported by economic reasoning.
Once you have selected a
topic, be sure to conduct a thorough Review of Literature on the subject. The
minimum length of your course paper is 4 pages, double-spaced
without the title page and the page on references. There is no upper page
limit for your paper. Additional guidance will be provided during the first
week of the course.
THE TOPIC IS ON Chapter 10: Savings, Investments, and the Financial System.
