N 490 Module 7: Teaching Violence in the Workplace Assignment

Module 7 Assignment

Objectives

´To determine the responsibility of a nurse caring for patients in an active shooter scenario

´To determine the protocol and preparations for an active shooter scenario

´To determine and describe reasons why bullying is a problem in nursing.

´To Provide suggestions for a new nurse who is being bullied by coworkers

As nurses, we have a responsibility to our patients to provide them with the best care possible. In an active shooter scenario, that means doing everything we can to keep them safe. This means being aware of our surroundings at all times and having a plan in place in case an active shooter does enter the building. We need to know where the exits are and make sure our patients are as close to them as possible. If we can get them out of the line of fire, that’s ideal. We also need to be prepared to provide first aid if necessary. Severe bleedings from gunshot wounds can be fatal if not treated immediately, so it’s important that we know how to apply pressure and stop the bleeding. Nurses have a responsibility to care for patients during an active shooter scenario. This includes assessing the situation, protecting patients, and providing medical care as needed. Nurses must also be aware of their own safety and take steps to protect themselves in order to continue to care for patients.

Preparing For an Active Shooter

Some of the specific steps we have taken include:

´Identifying and securing potential hideouts or safe rooms within the facility

´RFID tag technology to quickly locate staff in the event of an incident

´Thorough review of building security systems and access points

As the frequency of mass shootings in the United States continues to rise, it’s important for hospitals and other medical facilities to be prepared for an active shooter scenario. There are a number of steps that can be taken to secure potential hideouts and make sure that everyone in the facility is as safe as possible. One of the most important things you can do is to review your building security system and make sure that all doors are secured. RFID tag technology can be used to track people as they move throughout the facility, and this information can be used to identify potential hiding spots for an active shooter. By isolating these areas and making sure that they’re properly secured, you can make it more difficult for an attacker to move

´Working with local law enforcement to develop an coordinated response plan

´Holding regular Active Shooter Response training for all staff members

There are a few different ways to prepare for an active shooter scenario in a hospital setting. One option is to work with law enforcement officials to hold regular active shooter training drills. This will help hospital staff become familiar with the procedures and protocols required in the event of an active shooter situation. Another way to prepare is to create a crisis management plan specifically for active shooter incidents. The plan should include who will take charge in the event of an attack, what steps will be taken to secure the premises, and how victims will be evacuated and treated. Hospital staff should also review this plan regularly so that everyone is familiar with their roles and responsibilities during an emergency. Finally, it is important to have clear communication protocols in place to ensure that all the activities of the shooters can be thwarted. By isolating these areas and making sure that they’re properly secured, you can make it more difficult for an attacker to move.

Importance of Preparation to Active Shooter Incidence

´Proper preparation can help minimize loss of life and injury in the event of an active shooter incident in a healthcare organization (Sanchez et al., 2018).

´Healthcare organizations should have protocols in place for responding to an active shooter situation, including lockdown and evacuation procedures.

´Training and drills are essential for ensuring that personnel know how to respond quickly and effectively to an active shooter incident.

Preparation is key to minimizing loss and enhancing response in the event of an active shooter incident in a healthcare organization. To be effective, preparation must include coordinated effort from all stakeholders – staff, administration, security, and law enforcement. Through threat assessment, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training, and drills active shooter incidents can be managed more effectively saving lives. Threat Assessment- In order to prepare for an active shooter incident, it is crucial for healthcare organizations to first conduct a thorough threat assessment. This will help identify any vulnerabilities within the facility that could be exploited by an assailant as well as potential target areas. The information gathered from the threat assessment should then be used to develop appropriate countermeasures. Healthcare organizations should have protocols in place for responding to an active shooter situation, including lockdown and evacuation procedures. Training and drills are essential for ensuring that personnel know how to respond quickly and effectively to an active shooter incident.

Teaching Violence in the Workplace

Create a teaching PowerPoint presentation that addresses each of the following points/questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Use clear headings that allow your professor to know which bullet you are addressing on the slides in your presentation. Support your content with at least three (3) sources using APA citations throughout your presentation. Make sure to cite the sources using the APA writing style for the presentation. Include a slide for your references at the end. Follow best practices for PowerPoint presentations related to text size, color, images, effects, wordiness, and multimedia enhancements. Review the rubric criteria for this assignment.

This week you are to create a PowerPoint as if you are teaching this information to your colleagues.

Guns in the Workplace: prepare for an active shooter (what is the protocol and preparations your workplace has taken – if none have been developed describe what should be taken). What is the responsibility as a nurse caring for patients in an active shooter scenario?

Bullying in Nursing: Bullying in the nursing workforce has become an increasing topic of concern. Research this topic and describe reasons why bullying is a problem in nursing. Provide suggestions for a new nurse who is being bullied by coworkers. What is your responsibility if you see a fellow nurse being bullied?
