Complementary and alternative medicine entails products and practice not considered as part of standard medical care. Individuals use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to treat certain conditions, especially chronic health issues like hypertension and diabetes, cancer and arthritis among others (NCI, 2022). The use CAM remains controversial with limited scientific evidence showing the efficacy of these interventions. Studies show that individuals who prefer CAM consider them as part of holistic care delivery through the integrative medicine model which emphasizes the combination of conventional medicine with CAM practices and even medications (Jazieh et al., 2021). CAM aspects like aromatherapy, meditations and yoga, acupuncture, and even mandala are all important in provision of cultural competent and holistic care for patients in diverse healthcare settings. Imperatively, the inclusion of complementary and alternative health care practices into plans of care is important because it shows the integration of these approaches and conventional medicines to improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, the need for evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions and holistic care approach validate the inclusion of CAM, especially practices like yoga and meditation to improve one’s health status and allow them to navigate their delicate treatment interventions.

The enactment of the Affordable Care Act and population-based nursing models implore providers to be innovative and involve patients in the plans of care to improve access and quality of care (Keene et al., 2019). As such, the inclusion of complementary and alternative practices focuses on improving the overall quality of care for patients. Improving the implementation of these practices is essential and would entail working with patients to identify those interventions that can improve their coping mechanism and enhance their overall response to medication, especially yoga and meditation as components of improving holistic care (Toygar et al., 2020). The essence of such inclusion is to improve patient outcomes and better management of one’s condition.
