Over the past two weeks, my preceptor decided to focus mainly on the role of interprofessional collaboration in promoting patient care outcomes. Focusing on promoting mental health among frontline healthcare workers, specifically nurses, we noted that the main mental problems reported among my aggregate were work-related anxiety and depression. The complexity and multifactorial nature of depression and anxiety require collaborative interventions provided by an interprofessional team for standardized screening tools, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacological drugs (Pomare et al., 2018). In the management of anxiety disorder, following the screening results of my aggregate, I was able to become part of an interprofessional team comprising of a physician, pharmacist, nurses, and psychiatrist. The psychiatrist played a significant role in providing counseling sessions through zoom, which was effective in reducing the patient’s stress levels.
Nonetheless, we faced quite a number of challenges working with the preceptor. One of the main challenges was shared decision-making, where we would frequently disagree on what is the best intervention to implement. Limited time was also another factor given that all clinicians were busy with their respective roles in their departments. However, we managed to select a team leader, who made sure that our schedule aligned to create more time dedicated to taking care of the patient, and promoted good communication to promote appropriate decision making in the favor of the patient (Menear et al., 2020). Through this team, my aggregate was able to receive both pharmacological and psychological interventions which promoted positive care outcomes. They were no longer stressed and could open up to other colleagues about pressing matters, promoting good mental health, and overall well-being. In my future practice, I will make that I acquire adequate skills and competencies required to promote interprofessional collaboration in enhancing patient-centered care.
