NSGCB 302 Competency 3

§Health and Medicine Division (HMD) is an organization that offers recommendations to enhance healthcare systems and service delivery in USA

§It drives innovations and policies in healthcare

§Reports by the organization influences nursing practice

§Health organizations must implement strategies to advance healthcare based on the recommendations

HMD is an independent organization in the USA that is actively involved in the transformation of healthcare. The organization has committee members that provide factual and objective data that drive innovation in healthcare and improve the ability of healthcare organizations to respond to unforeseen needs in their environments. The organization also provides evidence-based data that inform the appropriateness and need for the different policies that are adopted in the country. HMD recommendations also affect nursing practice (Dzau et al., 2022; Englander et al., 2020). Accordingly, nurses and other healthcare providers have to embrace evidence-based strategies that will enhance the delivery of high-quality, safe, and efficient care for their diverse populations. Health organizations are also stimulated to embrace innovative strategies that respond to actual and potential needs in their consumer markets.

§Establishing effective leadership for patient safety

§Applying evidence into nursing care

§Incorporating technology into nursing care and practice

§Setting standards and expectations for safety, effectiveness, and efficiency

§Setting standards and expectations for safety, effectiveness, and efficiency

Several recommendations by the HMD directly affects nurses and their nursing care for the different populations. One of the recommendations is the need for the creation of effective leadership that promote patient safety. The HMD recommended that healthcare organizations should strive to ensure the adoption of effective leadership styles that will drive quality outcomes and enhance patient safety. The leadership should emphasize and support the adoption of interventions that improve patient safety. Some of the strategies proposed in the initiative to achieve this objective include creating culture of error reporting in nursing, improving performance, expanding staff knowledge base on safety, and investing organizational resources on developing effective nursing leaders for patient safety. The second recommendation relates to the application of evidence into nursing care (Dzau et al., 2022; Englander et al., 2020). The HMD recommendations recognized the need for the incorporation of new technologies into nursing practice to achieve outcomes such as efficiency, quality, and safety. The recommendations recognize the need for technology use in different aspects of healthcare such as the delivery of clinical care, public health services, professional education, administration and financial management, and improving consumer health. The organization recommended health institutions to invest their resources in developing the needed skills among their healthcare providers for enhanced care outcomes. The other recommendation is the application of evidence into nursing. The HMD report recognized the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing care. Accordingly, nurses should be competent in identifying, determining, and translating best evidences into nursing practice. The benefit of using evidence is that it eliminates variations in nursing care and enhances care outcomes such as safety and efficiency in nursing care. The last recommendation is setting standards and expectations for safety, effectiveness and efficiency (Gould, 2019; Leatherman & Berwick, 2020). The HMD recommended that hospitals should ensure standardization of systems and processes as per the state requirements. The standards and expectations guide the decisions that nurses make in their nursing care. For example, the use of standardized language in nursing practice eliminates potential errors in the care process, hence, enhanced care outcomes.

Progress Report on Organizational Transformation Assignment Directions

You have been tasked by your CNO to provide a report and present to the board of directors about how your organization is transforming based on Health and Medicine Division (HMD) recommendations in high-profile reports.

“The Health and Medicine Division (HMD) is a division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine that provides independent, objective analysis and advice to the nation and conducts other activities to solve complex problems and inform public policy decisions related to science, technology, and medicine” (National Academies, 2019). The National Academies have produced many reports with direct impacts on the field of nursing. As you read the following reports, think about policy, legislative, political, or payer changes that could advance or have advanced the quality of care you provide.

Report #1: Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century • Read ”A User’s Manual for the IOM’s ‘Quality Chasm’ Report” from the University Library.

• Read the following in Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century from the National Academy of Sciences: o Preface on pages ix–x o Executive summary on pages 1-22

Report #2: To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System • Read the following in To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System from the National Academy of Sciences: o Preface on pages ix–-x o Executive summary on pages 1–16

Report #3: Find the Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality

• Read the Executive Summary on pages 1–18 in Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality from the National Academy of Sciences. Determine which recommendations from the HMD directly affect how nurses provide care at the bedside. Research quality indicators (at the organization where you practice, one in your community, or one of interest) based on the determined recommendations. Cite evidence from the organization’s quality measures that demonstrate they are carrying out the HMD’s vision. Provide specific examples from the organization in the form of changes in care, governance, training, communication, and partnerships. Write a 260-word executive summary with speaker notes :

 • Explain HMD recommendations which directly affect how nurses provide care at the bedside. • Describe research results about quality indicators at the organization where you practice, one in your community, or one of interest.

 • Explain specific examples from the organization in the form of changes in care, governance, training, communication, and partnerships.

• Cite evidence from the organization’s quality measures that demonstrate they are carrying out the HMD’s vision. Note: The slides themselves should only contain essential information and as little text as possible. Do not design a slide presentation made up of long bullet points. Your speaker notes convey the details you would give if you were presenting. See Create Speaker Notes from Micro
