Overview
When engaging a community, especially an underserved or
marginalized population, it is important to understand the historical context
of the community—or the historical trauma the community may have experienced—to
understand their perspectives and the challenges they are experiencing
(Henderson et al., 2021; Patel & Nagata, 2021). Understanding a community’s
historical context is crucial to developing a collaborative relationship with
the community and understanding how to advocate for their needs.
In this assignment, you will identify a marginalized and
underserved population in your community along with a current issue or conflict
affecting the community, and you will discuss how to develop a collaborative
relationship with them, keeping in mind their history. You will also discuss
areas of advocacy you could develop for this population.
