For this discussion, post something to the discussion board related to the philosophical assumptions and behaviorism or your Week 3 readings. Engage in a conversation with your course community related to at least ONE of the following:
Explore the ethical implications of determinism in the context of personal responsibility and moral accountability. Consider a hypothetical situation where someone commits a harmful act. How might the concept of determinism influence your judgment of that person’s actions? Discuss whether determinism challenges or supports the idea of holding individuals accountable for their behavior. Share your insights into how society grapples with the moral and legal aspects of determinism.
Think about a significant decision you’ve made recently, whether it’s related to your career, relationships, or daily life. Share your experience in the group and discuss: Did you rely on concrete evidence and observation (empiricism) when making the decision? • Describe a real-life situation where you’ve seen the principle of parsimony effectively applied in understanding or addressing behavioral issues. Briefly explain the impact. As always, if you are relying on someone else’s ideas when presenting yours, you should reference your source. This includes sharing references to your fellow students’ ideas! Review the Evidence and APA Citation Links to an external site. 2 1 section of the Writing Center for help with references.
This discussion asks you to engage the philosophical assumptions behind science and behaviorism — often the ethics of determinism and personal responsibility, or reflecting on a recent decision through that lens. Pick one prompt and reason carefully about free will, determinism, and accountability.
Key takeaways
- Determinism: behavior is caused by prior factors (genetics, environment, history).
- This raises the free-will vs. determinism tension for moral/legal responsibility.
- Behaviorism assumes behavior is lawful and environmentally determined.
- Weigh whether determinism challenges or still supports accountability.
- Ground it in your Week 3 readings.
Determinism and responsibility
If you choose the ethics prompt: explain determinism — the assumption that behavior results from prior causes rather than uncaused free choice (central to a scientific, behaviorist view). Then work through the hypothetical harmful act: does determinism excuse the person, or can we still hold them accountable? Discuss the compatibilist view that responsibility and determinism can coexist (we hold people accountable to shape future behavior), and how society and law grapple with this (intent, capacity, deterrence).
Or: reflect on a decision
If you choose the reflection prompt, analyze a recent significant decision through the determinism lens — what prior factors (history, environment, reinforcement) shaped it, and whether it felt ‘free.’
Tie to the science
