DESCRIPTION. A windshield community survey is
basically riding in a car or van with persons who knows the area. The objective is to gain a better
understanding of the community’s social/economic profile. The students will be
divided into a group of four.
BENEFITS. A windshield community survey helps
to the following:
Broaden the awareness and understanding of the community
development in an area with more than one person.
Participants begin to see the linking bridges among their
observations and knowledge.
making your first Community visit and talking to a family you must drive around
the neighborhood of your assigned family.
Describe the boundaries of the area you surveyed to
answer these questions:
What types of housing are represented? (e.g.
single-family homes, public housing units, condos, etc.)
What access does the volunteer family have to shopping?
(e.g. grocery stores, pharmacies, other)
What forms of public transportation are available?
(e.g. nearest bus stop)
What parks/recreational areas are available?
What significant enclaves of discrete populations are
represented? (e.g. elders, children, race/ethnic groups)
What religious organizations or churches are
What social agencies, schools, or health facilities are
What obvious health hazards are noticeable? (e.g. busy
streets, lack of sidewalks, lack of traffic lights, poor lighting, etc.)
