Discuss the following content in your essay:

What you learned from your previous iteration and how you adjusted your new game based on the problem-solving methods you used to improve on your previous design iteration.

How your previous similar games research was integrated/influenced the design of your final game. Use this to discuss your chosen visual aesthetic for levels, characters, etc.

How your game is fun using course concepts, using 3 or more concepts each from challenge and play:

Challenge: Reaching and Exceeding Goals, Competing against Opponents, Stretching Personal Limits, Exercising Difficult Skills, Making Interesting Choices

Play: Living out Fantasies, Social Interaction, Exploration and Discovery, Collection, Stimulation, Self-Expression and Performance, Construction/Destruction, Story

The kind of choices players need to make and the rewards and punishments associated with them, based on course readings.

How you created your sound design, e.g., how you conceptualized, gathered, edited, and applied your sound design.

Your playtesting process, what you did, what you learned and how you applied feedback.

How the interface, view point, and control schemes that you designed helps users play and understand your game.

Support Documents (Not included in Essay word count): Create the following support documents to submit with your essay

A tagline for your game that is under 50 words describing your game

A short summary of your game, 50-100 words, that you will use in your game presentation during the last day of class

An updated/finalized core gameplay loop graph/diagram, and control scheme chart

Updated moodboard with 10 or more images used to develop your second iteration

Updated sketches that show 5 or more sketches/digital drawings/mockups of characters, levels, objects, interfaces, etc. used to create the second iteration of your game

Video Game Component: Submit a playable version of your video game

Your video game is intended to be presented and played during the final class

This can be done by playing your game in the Play mode in Unity, though, a final version will need to be submitted

Video game demos can be submitted using an online publishing system through Unity or other service

Your video game files will need to be submitted using a zipped file or cloud storage system with a shared link to download the files, e.g., Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, etc.

Instructions

Students will develop a playable 2D/2.5D video game using the Unity game engine or other approved software that integrates their design proposal and concepts from the course. The project submission will be accompanied by a written reflection.

Essay:

Essay needs to be formatted as: 900-1000 words, double-spaced, 11-point font, Times New Roman/Arial/Cambria, MLA/APA/Chicago citation format with bibliography/works cited page or section if any citations are used. Students may use first-person pronouns (e.g., “I,” “my,” etc.) while writing their reflection paper.

Create 3 or more documents to present the requirements outlined above, submitted as PDF or JPG files. These files can contain content created during lecture that relates to your video game project.

In-class Game Presentation:

Tagline and 50 to 100 word description of your game that summarizes controls, goals, rules, concept, etc. needs to be present/viewable to players.

Game can be played on a laptop present in class or a shared link to be played in browser on another computer during class.
