(b) Identify the relevant SMM clauses, explain and illustrate with appropriate diagrams the special considerations to keep in mind when measuring bearing timber members and plates that exceed 5.00 metres in length. Demonstrate the calculations involved with examples and give reasons for your answers.

Question 2

Figures Q2.1 to Q2.3 show the plan and sections of a hipped roof. Apply SMM rules and take-off quantities for the following works:

(a) Roof tile covering and the associated underlays.
(b) Ridge and hip capping, including the special eave courses.
(c) Structural timber including fascia boards .
(d) Eave boards including bearers.

Specifications:

Roof tiles shall be Hugenot HP 10 clay interlocking tiles with matching ridge, hip and eave tiles and fixed to 50 x 50 mm timber battens @ 300 mm c/c with galvanized nails. Pitch of roof is at 45 degrees.
Special tiles shall be required at ridges, hips and eaves of roof.
Roof underlay shall comprise of two layers of bitumen felt overall 10 mm thick.
Roof insulation shall be 50 mm thick fibre glass with double sided sisalation foil 450 and laid on fabric mesh 3325 to underside of roof covering
All roof timber shall be keruing preserved timber
Fascia board shall be 350 mm x 50 mm thick with halve joints for timber length exceeding 5.00 m long
All rafters and ridge board shall be 250 x 75 mm thick with scarfed joints. Rafters shall be spaced at 600 mm c/c.
Calcium silicate board shall be painted with 2 coats of emulsion paint
