Select a painting or photograph that represents an aspect of a culture that is unfamiliar to you (a few aspects to consider: weddings, funerals, children, women’s roles, men’s roles, faith practices, dances, eating traditions, shelter, medical services, and beauty). Examine the text and discuss the way it represents a culture’s traditions, practices, and habits. Research this practice and compare how you observe the aspect differently from your cultural position. For example, funerary rituals vary greatly among cultures. Joseph Lycett’s An Aboriginal Funeral depicts the Aboriginal way of laying the dead to rest. How does the painting depict an approach to remembering or honoring the dead differently than what you are accustomed to?
Create a presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi or other presentation software) that includes the following:
1) The text you will discuss
2) Information about the text’s subject matter
3) Your view of the text’s content
4) A chart or diagram comparing the practice or observation of the aspect in your culture to the culture represented in the visual text
5) the highlighted use of four or more vocabulary terms throughout the presentation
6) a reference page in Turabian style for all sources used
