Create a core or foundational English Language teaching plan for children in your chosen age group.
From your chosen curriculum document, select an English Language curriculum area and identify a language curriculum objective for your selected age group of students. Examples of Language Curriculum (or Learning) Objectives are provided below:
a) Curriculum Objective: Listen for information and enjoyment
b) Curriculum Objective: Listen and view for understanding by drawing on prior knowledge and contextual clues, including semiotic features, and applying a range of listening and viewing skills and learner strategies to interpret texts.
Refer to your milestones chart Q1a and derive the Lesson Objective. Examples of Lesson Objectives are provided below:
a) Lesson Objective: Understand and follow one- to two-step verbal instructions (e.g. “Draw a picture and color it.”) (MOE, 2013, p18).
b) Lesson Objective: Use a dictionary to find the meaning of new words.
Use the language developmental milestones (identified in Q1a) as a guide to creating a developmentally appropriate teaching plan. Your plan should reflect opportunities for language learning, practice, and assessment of the lesson objective and curriculum objective you have selected. You may also consider using the “Hook, Procedure (Instructions and Practice), Closure” table from Seminar 4.
Question 1c
Use the “Framework for Analysing the Language Demands of Curriculum Areas” (O’Hare, Pritchard, and Zwier, 2012) to analyze the language demands of the teaching plan you created in Q1b.
Question 1d
Comment on the cognitive bases of language development needed for a child to participate effectively in the lesson you have planned. Describe possible challenges/ difficulties a child with cognitive delay/ disorder might face in participating in this lesson.
Question 1e
i) Choose ONE type of challenge/ difficulty from your answer in Q1d. Use appropriate terms and labels to state and describe the specific area or aspect of language affected.
ii) Identify and summarize ONE (1) journal article that reports the findings of a language or communication intervention that addresses the area or aspect of language need you have chosen.
