READ- The history of research ethics has changed the way I view biomedical research. The decades of evolution in biomedical research ethics traced to the horrors of World Wars I and 2 and the inhumane treatment of subjects by the Nazi regime was the genesis of a long struggle to protect human subjects in research (Salhia & Olaiya, 2020). The lessons taught me that ethics and human subject protection are compulsory in biomedical research to prevent mistreatment and the horrors witnessed at the early stages of biomedical research during the world wars. Also, the increasing consensus on safeguarding human participants in biomedical research through principles such as maleficence was crucial in streamlining biomedical research and instilling participant confidence. The lessons changed my view because I began perceiving ethics as a biomedical research prerequisite.

Contemporary researchers take adequate measures to protect participants’ rights, considering that none of the studies can proceed to data collection or introduce intervention on human subjects before they pass the ethical requirements threshold. Also, they must be approved by an authorized body. For instance, researchers must explain all the ethics requirements met and measures taken to protect participants. I feel that the research does implement adequate measures to protect participants. Perhaps ethics requirements for biomedical research collecting data through observation need to be revisited or improved, considering that in cases where human subjects are unaware of the data collection process.
