The final paper should be 3-4 pages, double-spaced with 12-point font. Please divide your paper using headings, addressing the topics and prompts below (Career-Readiness Development, Internship Goals, Company Profile & Culture, and Career Management).
Career-Readiness Development
Review the following list of eight career-readiness competencies: Career Readiness for the New College Graduate: A Definition and Competencies (Links to an external site.).
Then, discuss in which competencies you believe you have the greatest strength and why. Elaborate with detail and examples on why you believe this.
Last, discuss in which competencies you would like to develop in this internship and why. Elaborate with detail and examples on why you want to develop these competencies, how you can facilitate the growth, and who can support you in your development.
Internship Goals
First, consider the career readiness competencies you would like to develop.
Then, list and elaborate on at least three skills/knowledge areas/strengths for development that you want to develop in your internship by creating SMART Goals.
Note:
Goals should be S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely).
Avoid ambiguous and generic goals. ‘learn finance’ or ‘improve communication’ are vague. Pinpoint exactly what type of finance or what form of communication you hope to improve.
Quantify when possible. To know if a goal was accomplished there must be some means to measure it.
For each SMART goal, name the career readiness competencies that you will develop.
Examples:
Critical Thinking/Communication: I will learn three new finance terms per week.
Communication: I will write one blog post on marketing best practices per week for the company website.
Communication/Professional: I will conduct informational interviews with five colleagues by the end of the internship.
Then, discuss why each goal is important to your personal and/or professional growth in your internship.
Last, identify necessary steps/courses of action to achieve each of the goals identified above.
Company Profile & Culture
Consider and discuss the following questions:
What are the internship site’s mission, culture, and/or core values?
What will your primary duties and responsibilities be? (i.e., day to day, overall projects, month to month, etc.)
How does your role fit into the bigger picture of the internship site’s mission (please be very specific)?
Who are the key individuals that you will be working with and in what capacity?
We recommend speaking with your supervisor about the following questions:
What does your supervisor expect from you?
How will your supervisor support you in your professional development and in reaching your goals?
Career Management
Consider and discuss the following questions:
Why did you choose this internship?
How does this internship fit in with your career goals? Is this position in the field you want to pursue after graduation?
How will this internship help you secure a job or graduate studies after you graduate
